Introduction
East Turkey, forced by studying in the summer we went and this was one of the
destinations for that period were eligible. Short flight, that was
good. Not many read so surprised by all the things we seen
and have experienced.
Much more than we thought, more of everything:
Many friendly, kind people, many old stones, and in such Hattusas
Ani, lots of tea with lots of sugar (blood sugar shot up), many
white bread, lots of chicken, lots of Efes, many pumping stations and fun.
Thursday, July 13 / Friday, July 14
Because we are at an early date at the airport and we had a chance but would
in order that we take the train the night before the journey and Piet
Hennie slept. Saskia Den Bosch Central brought us to where we train
would take to Amsterdam Central Station. Of course, the train for fifteen minutes
delay, Piet After all costs and it can almost not different.
Because it is a direct connection was enough time and we had made it all
not much.
From the station we took the tram to our place to stay gone
that went fine, despite the rush hour. It was busy in the tram, but we
stepped from the main station, so still had seats. When we got out
Piet came to the conclusion that you can wear two backpacks at the same time by placing
hang one on your abdomen. It is practical, but does not look. Go ahead,
it's the holidays and the convenience factor. Slept, but short
since half past eleven we have been chatting for five hours and the clock expired.
Hennie had made breakfast and Piet took us to the airport, all very luxurious
and so it was good the first hotel of this holiday a reality. After an hour of very
chaotic waiting for check we were through and we could go buy the VI
and drink coffee, good traditions you finally honor.
After a short flight to Munich we had boarding immediately to Ankara. When we
Customs stood was an announcement that the boarding for our flight five minutes
later would stop and we were a bit nervous.
We therefore asked the man for us if we could for him because our customs officer was not so fast. Overall
went well, we were on the plane and the doors were closed, and if we're
have had good shopping ...
A short flight to Ankara, wine (a glass full of lemonade), with a bite
wine, half an hour sleep and then we were already Leaving the airport
went very smoothly and quickly, our tour leader Karen Kohn was already on our
waiting and the bus was true. When we were waiting, we
acquainted with our peers. It is clear that a singles
journey, there are even two couples. At the airport I had not
changed, that was not so necessary, but next time I do it
really now, I feel somewhat onthand no local money.
Arriving at our hotel in Ankara Spor appeared to be fine, everything works and the
room with two beds just looks good and is of course in the center.
Very important if you want path.
After freshen up we were enjoying our first beer Efes information
about the trip and Ankara. It told Karen that we are not our own backpacks
had to carry, so Piet still does not know whether a backpack like it. Also
she told us that the State had been designated a Turkish guide who
was in possession of a guide license, foreign tour guides get
, but it is obviously necessary.
Then we made the group a short walk, we could exchange money and
we just walked to the bazaar in turkey tasting. Of course fruit
bought delicious peaches and bananas for Piet. With the group we are also
dinner at a dinner where we could identify Lokanta as we have already
Istanbul had done. I ordered two dishes for each and rice there.
Was too much, I had the idea that you got small plates and wanted vegetables
and meat. Next time at least there is no rice, there is sufficient
bread on the table and was brought a salad. Unfortunately there were no
alcoholic beverages, but that was later well known as a
beer tent with a few companions. Back at the room we first bags
but once repacked so we each had our own stuff.
Saturday, July 15
Slept, showered and had breakfast. For nine hours we took the group on the bus
left for a tour through the most important things in Ankara. First
Karen asked us for our Turkish guide, called a "silent guide" Ceylan
Tuna, a nice girl of 26 years.
First stop was the mausoleum of Ataturk, very impressive. There we also
museum of the history of Turkey visited the history as it was
Since taking office. Impressive what this man has meant to the country, are
influence is still felt, especially in the separation between religion and state.
While in the Netherlands infinite and endless discussions arise about
religious freedom and the wearing of religious symbols like headscarves and
veils in turkey is very simple: religion is something of yourself and not
intertwined in the public affairs of cities such as driving or even the country. This
means no veil or headscarf in public life. That is (at least
I think) the only possible way to fundamentalism of any origin
therefore to suppress.
In the museum we could not take pictures, but we could not leave it here.
Especially the statements he made about empowerment, sports and development
are very progressive, and I could not resist it and pictures
it.
After a cup of tea in the cafeteria of the mausoleum complex, we've gone
the Kocatepe Camii, our first mosque (we were still many visits). Since
we got our first headscarves on, I had used my sarong
from Indonesia, who did fine.
When we were bored we took the bus to the citadel to where we
First drinking coffee in a Turkish tent concepts rather expensive. Since
we have for the first time pot filled. After the coffee a little walk with the
group by the citadel, but after fifteen minutes we went on together. Top
the citadel I have bought a holiday necklace or L1, 00, as it may
costs.
Well together and run a light lunch with a beer made in a beautiful
restaurant overlooking the city. Piet had Efes dark, we would not
so often encounter. After lunch we walked a little past the museum of
an advocate of the Ottoman civilizations. We were given an unsolicited
whole treatise on everything that was destroyed and by the past and
current directors of the country. She advised against us to the Anatolian Museum
go there anyway because they only tell lies about her beloved Ottomans.
It's good to see that there are still people who put their hearts into the
defending what they see as correct. After the partial tour of the
museum anyway we went to the Anatolian Museum. Lots of information
the ancient civilizations of Turkey is to find and there is said to
a good preparation for the rest of the trip. At the museum, I do
Mama call but here, we become what it is sentimental and want to let
know we have arrived. At this place, still, maybe
Whereas the rest of turkey little or no coverage.
After visiting the museum we went back to the hotel and we
go stamps bought and we've been hunting for postcards.
The latter did not work out, but we have stamps and addresses, so
when we encounter what we started.
In the room we made a cup of broth and peaches from the market
eaten and then take a shower. We went to eat at Ankara Iskender
Kebap, a restaurant around the corner from the hotel. I had a mixed grill and Piet
a chicken pies, very good but not ordered bread and salad it was still
all to much. We got our beer served in a glass
was wrapped with aluminum foil (but maybe a bit illegal?). Course
ordered baklava, it took a while but was delicious. A variant called blood
and was filled with cheese. After dinner we went to the beer tent of the previous
ladies of the evening we tried to explain the control that we all
went. That was not easy, she knew many places of the itinerary
not.
Sunday, July 16
To the alarm was half past six, we left again from Ankara. After a fine
breakfast were put large bags in the bus (what a luxury) and we went on
Hattusas path, the ancient Hittite capital. Along the way we are halfway
the four hour ride a drink at a roadside restaurant adjoining gas station.
Coffee was served in plastic cups, so it was tea.
At the shop has a spare Piet clippers and I bought a kind
vishoedje which
I would get a lot of fun.
The first site we visited was Yazilikaya, an ancient religious site with even
prominent reliefs of gods and priests. Also in the rock-hewn
altars and sacrificial sites were still intact. After the tour we went for lunch.
Karen had ordered a lunch with a tomato soup, köfte and a scrambled egg. A beer
there and I had had enough and Piet as so often too. After lunch we went on
path to the old and "new" capital of the Hittites to visit in
direction of the guide had already told us about the reliefs on the previous site.
Especially in the first part I'm not entirely guided by the guide, I
would always look around himself and then did not need much explanation,
Sometimes my imagination is limitless and can much of an idea so I think
in my head how it may have once looked. And if I miss it
I would not so bad, it's my picture. It was
unfortunate that the distances between the different sites was so great
we always had to take the bus. At half past five we arrived at our next hotel,
The Mavi Ocak, a roadside motel. There was nothing wrong with nice rooms and a
pool (not used by us). Not with the group, but eaten together. Course
everything from the grill again, this time I with eggplant, delicious.
Monday, July 17
To the alarm was half past six, we go way to Amasya. After a fine again
breakfast and the bus en route to the next town. With only one toilet break
we arrived around eleven at the destination where we with the whole
group went to the tourist office. We were then provided with a booklet about the
city and its attractions. Ceylan also made sure that we all
set of five postcards received, so that was nice and included, the stamps
because we had already then a short briefing in hotel Maden, fast stuff on
The chamber made (very luxurious, with separate bedroom and living species) and altogether
path. First in a tent next to the hotel met with a sandwich for Döner Kebab
Piet yarna (a kind of buttermilk), together for 2.50 L, ridiculous prices for such
large roll filled with meat).
We have at our ease on a bench near the river eaten, while still
two Turkish women before us stood up and sat on another bench. Of our
da did not, of course, there was room enough, but with all the ladies wanted
violence rise.
First we wanted to visit the museum, but it was closed on Monday. When his
We at our leisure to the Pontic tombs run. Here we had our first card
Now, the damage was pretty easy, it was only 2.00 L pp. A nice climb
up on a kind of road and finally you climb, but we had time
enough so it was all good. At the tomb itself was not much to see, even
here was pretty much graffiti on the walls and the tombs themselves. To continue to
avoid fences were put down, too bad.
After all the climbing we would have deserved a drink and went to a terrace
on the River. Sorry, no alcoholic beverages, but a water five
tea and two cans of soft drinks for 5.00 L. The prices went there and nothing about the
was a great place. We got the cards to sit home writing.
After taking a picture of the twisted and its minaret, we Camii
calmly walked to an internet cafe where we have an email to the kids
sent. Again go for a walk along the promenade, we are apparently not
only people who do the ladies for a few hours before we got up
were still nice to stroll. During the hike we walked along the Mehmet
Pasa Camii that was grown and when I was curious what the further
site was we were approached by someone and we got a full
tour. The gate was opened and we were without headscarf and
the shoes inside. Probably because no mosque at that time
served as a prayer house. Some pictures and address on an envelope
to write (good idea by Piet, so there can be no misunderstanding about
address and we lose no loose papers) and continued with our
walk. When we came through the post office I wanted to send postcards,
but it was so busy I did not even think. So we went
the (we believe) only terrace where they gave alcohol. The first beer
we did at the table with Anje and Jacques, who then departed for their dinner appointment
with the group. After a beer we decided that we only stayed there eating. Each
and some sat on the terrace at another table and before she too
went out for dinner with the group helped a little with each menu, this
was only in Turkish and then I knew the word for soup yet.
Serving the food was all blood is fast, we had our soup
not at all when the main course arrived, so the latter we have only just
returned (not that it came again and certainly not warmer, so we had
it might as well leave).
After dinner we slippers, bananas and water bought and made into a nightcap
The hotel bar (we as a couple and the waiter). I've found in bath
located while Piet was going to make some night shots.
Tuesday, July 18
At half past six wake-up call for a long day of about 12 hours. At half
seven we started driving, the first stop was around nine hours. We have coffee and
tea at a Shell gas station Karin everyone a country map
arranged and drink. The card was fine, not to drink coffee almost as strong,
but with a lot of sugar I got him still away. Next time anyway
tea again.
After the break we drove until we at eleven in a nice Black Sea Coast
village arrived. There could swim, but we did not. Everyone
was there on your own for a walk, drink or eat. First we look at
the post office to finally be able to send the cards away. As the officer watched
first extended to the stamps, it looked like he first saw them.
After they were good were he began to stamp, so maybe he just looked
but even if they were firm enough.
Then we continued walking we got a very quick cup of tea offered by
The owner of a little beach. He said he had three babies who were found
later, grown men. One sat on the terrace, play games,
did an operation and the youngest was called in to interpret. The latter
is a master student at the University of Ankara and spoke reasonable English. Short
after the owner arrived, he took the identity card of an elderly man who
already was in, where it was required and we do not know we have not
requested. When we said goodbye we could not afford the tea and we were
both (yes, even Piet) kissed as if we were old friends. Yet even here the
walked into town, a street that was so well done so.
I bought the go
roll a ball (köfte). After the short walk we went to Karen and
Ceylan on the beach terrace and have a chat about travel
travel in general and India in particular.
After everyone got back we went by bus, some reading, some
sleep, shortstop for (again free) tea and a toilet break. Also ran a
Magnum bought for 2.00 L, not just the food and non-alcoholic beverages
they are cheap.
At the end of the day we arrived in Trabzon where we first Hagia Sophia Museum
visited. This is a church with beautiful frescoes from the Byzantine period, a
small village cottage with lovely furnishings and a tea garden. Since we have plums
tasted (of course) tea and the last postcards purchased.
After the visit to Hotel Horon, although not as fancy as the previous again not
wrong. The only thing that people could say that some of the
television still very exciting uitzonden movies: porn as hard as you
wanted.
The men of the group went to the hammam and the ladies were eating together. Piet and
I just went our own way and after a cup of broth in the room go
find a restaurant from the LP. After dinner we went to the pub Efes
for a beer. What happened to us there again is hardly outdated:
There is only one section for men and for women only and a portion
mixstellen. When I (of course) went the wrong way came very soon
a waiter refer me to the right place. There was nothing wrong with that but
how weird.
Wednesday, July 19
I slept, put no alarm. This morning was for us because I do not
the ladies went to the hammam.
Soon mail checked, achieved a 7.34 for strategy, so a back inside.
I pity these five for statistics, but that is happy.
Money exchange, € 400.00 again, I'm not happy without.
After that just made a cup of tea on the large square in the city and then
back to the hotel at noon we left for the Sumela Monastery.
When we arrived it was drizzling and we all had lunch, but first, a Turkish
pizza with meat. The bulk of the group walked up, it was
a nice steep climb that lasted slightly longer than that for half an hour
stood. But as usual does not, I'll be there naturally. Shame about the weather,
The drizzle and low clouds.
So we could see the path from the monastery and the process was not over
as beautiful as it would have been in the sun.
Yet the frescoes were very
impressive, it must have been a very nice complex.
We have pictures
made of a Turkish family and promised that we would send. Something for
appointed time we went down for a beer and continued our journey
Uzungöl to the destination. Road was only a little rain. After
and meanwhile another usual stop at a gas station we arrived half
eight in a dreary hotel complex. Another nice room in a sort of
apartment just off the main building. We have in the main building
ate with the group, there was no alcohol because a group of Arabs
were. The food was excellent and the atmosphere cozy. After dinner, put a portion of the
staff a Turkish dance, music by the band that has sat all night
games (fun, but as always too loud). After dinner we (packed
in newspaper) along with Elke, Saskia, Jacques and Anje even bought beer and raki
and on the terrace of our room drunk. Was nice to twelve hours, we were
in our double bed.
Thursday, July 20
For five hours awakened by the imam, lot of noise, to pee and back to sleep.
Piet managed to weather not here, so they had a short night. Ran for seven hours
alarm. First we made a good shower and some breakfast at the
building.
For eight hours we took the dolmus up for our walk. Rained down
it, fortunately it was dry up, but the weather really was not. Many missing or
low clouds. It runs nice and if it is not so hot, but it
sun would have been better. However, there were beautiful vistas, many small and
separate little flowers and delicious wild strawberries. When we walked an hour
had surfaced and we continued with the dolmus to another great
place to go hiking. There was not much, now it began to drizzle.
It was a pity because we came to a village where the people are very friendly
and we had cookies were offered by the children who are just out of school
came. Before we went to the village we had just bought some fruit from
the local shop.
But it was mostly fog, drizzle and ensure that you are not slipping. Even
almost did not socialize, if you do not want to walk in the mud was up
in the shoulder and seemed to watch out for cow patties (also nice and smooth by
rain). Meanwhile, the drivers and guide further went down to
provide lunch. That was nice and simple, bread with cheese and sausage served
with natural tomato and cucumber and water. Nothing wrong with that so.
After lunch we went down by dolmus. A few people were still
walk from the mosque to the hotel, but a few which we had had it.
We were wet and cold, leaving us to the hotel drive.
Soup and tea in the room made the TV set (which was obviously brand new)
and the stuff to dry on the stove. Because we did not want the whole
noon and evening to sit in the hotel room we fell back to walk.
Initially we had decided we were going to walk towards the village, there
was because a number of restaurants that looked nice. Halfway through, we still
but conversely, the road was a dirt road in this weather so a dirt track and
every car that came along we were forced. Moreover, there was little or no
we saw the lighting and mood for the evening already hanging, so here we had
no sense. So we are near the hotel but went to the terraces
to try to hunt for a beer. It was not easy.
In the first restaurant told the somewhat (actually very) intrusive waiter
that there was only one restaurant was where we would get certain beers. Fortunately he
us the name and the direction in which we had to walk. After a few glasses of tea
we have therefore taken it to run, though it was further than the waiter
had called and we had almost abandoned. The restaurant turned out to be
Solakli the Motel where we go to the walk that morning had all along
and where did clearly seen the beer sold canopies and other
Efes expressions.
When we arrived it was completely empty (and remained so) and was
staff working on the table. It looked great and we have therefore
delicious drink some beers. We also had something else to take it
were even bottles of Bacardi and gin in the refrigerator. Between the beers won by
I sit writing. Last year I started the tradition
to the notebook to complete before we eat at the restaurant where we just
then sit and that was good. So we have good sat and drank
eaten. Even a small bottle of raki and some beer with it and we were L50, 00
totally ready.
The drinks have taken on our own terrace with drink first
Every Dick and then, Hans, Saskia and Marlies were keeping us company.
They too had their own drinks at the restaurant because there are not exactly the
whole evening was donated.
Friday, July 21
To half past five was the alarm for a long travel day. Unfortunately it was still breakfast
not ready and it was fifteen minutes later than planned before we left.
Let's start to the mosque for a photo stop at the lake. Luckily it was better
again as the day before, so it will probably be a pretty picture. Furthermore, we
for lunch a visit to a tea factory. We were given a tour
and (of course) offered a cup of tea. Then we have only one stop at
a gas station made before we arrived for lunch in Artvin. It took
Mustafa any trouble finding a parking space for the bus to find, eventually succeeded
that the door of the restaurant. After dinner and a kind of köfte
Stew (and the refusal of a refilled water bottle), we went through the
main street where we walked to a liquor store and a small bottle of Johnnie Walker
Raki bottle bought. Almost we also took a gun with him, who were there
namely, complete with ammunition in the window. Probably knew the shopkeeper so
what the cost, but the price of the whiskey he had in any case find it.
After shopping just one stop before we arrived at a quarter to six in our highly
simple hostel in Barhal Yusufeli. Karen warned us that the owner
had rather strange ideas about dealing with women, who thinks it's a charmer
quite pull it off. Luckily I was at my age and with the
company of Piet not be affected. After a cup of soup in the room and a beer
the terrace of the house we heard the plans for tomorrow, we go all day
walking. At the briefing we were told that we were able to return,
nothing per room and head count. Just sort of white fur on the couch and on the
throw top floor, then came back tomorrow. Or exciting than anything we
back again, so here is a list built.
We ate together at a local restaurant I in the bus on the way
had seen. Then we go on the internet. When I wanted to go banking
I got the message that the logins were blocked and I could apply new
which then would be sent by mail. Shoot I just went with it, I wanted
Patrick and Joke are € 25.00 on the holiday for which I had forgotten to give
When we last saw them. We do so well when we get home.
Furthermore, we ended up in a whore tent when we wanted to do a beer in one
local tent. A lot of drunk guys and what is reasonable and staff around them
hung. The balcony we could not, as was later the curtains
closed. The owner met us personally or shake hands with us
welcome, what the hell you do with it. But apart from a drunken
man who occasionally stood up loudly to call anything there was nothing
hand and kept us so we just drink beer, served with peanuts
So mind you.
Then we did a nightcap on the terrace of the guest house where later
Hans and Elke aanschoven yet.
Saturday, July 22
At six thirty the alarm went off for one day walk. First at a breakfast
done, that was simple but fine and then with two vans on the road to
hiking spot. Initially they wanted us all happy to cram into a van
and some loose stools lend to people that really no place
for it. We have not yet done, that's fine for a piece of
five minutes on a paved road, but not for a half hour bumpy in the mountains.
So half van was ordered and then it went fine. First we did a
stop at an old Gregorian church (as always) had turned into
mosque. He was no longer in use and therefore we could not. For photo
of all we had to get into the garden of a nearby house. That was
not an issue if we are not trampling crops and no pictures were of
the woman over the railing of her balcony hanging. Piet was later on that spot
and knew nothing of that appointment, he said after he had made the picture. Strangely, I
had told him, but sometimes he is a bit (East Indian) deaf. It is
become a beautiful picture. After a while driving we arrived in a village where
We drank tea and lunch dual sourcing, nice and fresh (hot) bread and sausage and cheese
along with a drink and a can of beans. Went to the toilet at the mosque
with the ladies even went to the men's room because the toilet of the ladies
apparently do not look. As I walked toward it, there were also some
men washing the feet and we also went into the mosque itself was.
It's really for use, complete with heater and air conditioning unit.
After all these activities are a short dolmus to the top before we
the walk began. That was very nice, warm, not least because we
quite a few times went up and / or had to scramble. Tiring, but
have a wonderfull time. We ate lunch in the front yard of a house
was part of a village that lay scattered over the hills. The only
central place was the cemetery where we also have brought a visit.
There was also natural spring water from the ground and I had a drink with
idea that if it is not pure on this mountain that is nowhere.
After visiting
We also walked the cemetery and we met few people,
a lot of streams with very bright (and drinkable) water a few times where I
I filled my bottle with cool water.
Also way we came to a house where we
more berries were offered but I declined. Not because they did not
would be, but simply because I did not like it.
After the walk we made some tea in the village where we started and
so went back to the vans Yusufeli. Unlike Uzungöl had
We therefore sunny and beautiful weather.
After returning we did a beer and we have our own was chosen. We
All have recovered, but nothing was ironed so glad I still
reisstrijkijzertje've taken. Then we went looking for food. We
arrived at a terrace where a wedding was taking place. When we were watching
We were also invited to the festival area to come, but we first
denied because we had to eat. Wet the food at the restaurant where the
festival site was operated from (soup with lots of fatty meat and stews
as fatty meat with tea and baklava) we fell into the wedding reception
been. There is lots of dancing through the village, it's coming and going
guests and nothing is given. Probable that the invitees
reserved for the bride and groom, but everyone is allowed to dance on the ground,
watch and especially to chat with other villagers. All very nice,
Although men and women (of course) sitting apart.
When we got back to the hotel was almost the whole group on the terrace of our
guesthouse and we were moved to Saskia for a nightcap to do. Then
quickly to the room to pack the stuff, we will continue tomorrow.
Sunday, July 23
Course on time again, just showered and had breakfast and then on to
Kars. As we waited for the bus came to the bakery for fresh bread
various shops in the street. He just laid it in a box on the
facade of the shop was still locked. The refrigerators were standing outside
Just open and lay the tomatoes in a crate under a tarp. Apparently,
they are not thieves Yusufeli, so it would be everywhere, but unfortunately ...
After a while driving we arrived in a village where we drank tea and did shopping
for residents of very poor villages along the road where we were coming. The
Poverty in that "way" villages was indeed poignant, especially the children
were very pleased with the biscuits and lollipops. Then we continued to Kars to
Göngüren in our hotel to check in, as always, not much wrong with that.
We first but once had lunch in a nice restaurant, it looked very classy
, but the prices were too bad, another good tip from the Planet so.
After lunch we walked around and the Apostle Church and the Old Bridge views.
Walking back we arrived at the ruins of ancient Armenian churches where we
have been briefly. There was not much else to see, but the building itself
was interesting. Back to our hotel where we would gather to Ani to
go, a site with many old churches and other buildings. In the bus started
Guide to tell already, but I (and I think more companions) little
of childhood. The site itself was great, with a large plain buildings in
more or less been restored. At the end of the site was a river
the border with Armenia was, we were so very close.
After the tour we have a cold beer and have done a lot further along
have dinner at a restaurant in a park on a large fountain. There sat a (pale
later) Dutch family of Turkish origin behind us and we have a daughter
and later the father sit chatting. The father was 34 years ago to
Netherlands came as guest workers and had built a life. Once
the two years they came to Turkey to visit family.
A nightcap in the hotel and taken back to bed too late. The nights here
are as short as home, an hour or six.
Monday, July 24
As usual at eight o'clock for our ride to Dogubayazit. Before
we left I was in the lobby of the hotel we sit chatting with a
Dutch boy of Iranian descent. He was waiting for his visa
Iran, the homeland of his mother. The visa had come from the Iranian Embassy
in Kars, apparently you do not have to settle in the Netherlands.
After hiking a ride with the necessary stops and smoke, we drank tea in a
fairly chaotic tent. Yet a little further before we place
arrived for our lunch destination. Another long table, but otherwise
well care and the food was excellent, accompanied by a cold beer. After
lunch we went with the group to the "black market" that showed just a bazaar
be. Because we already had seen several times to the toilet and Piet had
we went back to the restaurant, so we had a nice cup
tea taken. When the waiter came to ask us for our best rates at a
lottery form have we done that the only price it
came out it was the account of the tea we did not have to pay. Maybe
the waiter more removed, but that is awarded him warmly.
Still only a
or ten minutes before we walked around the bus and the group to the Ishak Pasha
Palace went for the tour. A very nice house, there is still plenty to
restored, especially the warehouses of the caravanserai have yet done
be, these are still under construction. It was very quiet, just some
other Turkish tourists.
After the tour we went to Sim-er Hotel brought that was quite an end of
the city. It seems that there is insufficient accommodation in the city and we therefore had
swerve. It was good but not very special, that feeling down with
location. It meant we could not go to town and more or less
were forced to stay at the hotel.
Yet we have a lot of fun, first on the roof terrace with a large proportion of
the group with a few beers. There Everien ordered a bottle of wine some quite
surprising to the waiter. When he was a little while later with a half-full bottle
arrived it was first inspected by a tour guide of a Belgian group
was present. He accepted him, he said tasted like vinegar. Everien and
Elly (who together would share the bottle) then took something else anyway. Then
We have dinner in a very "cozy" room with a Russian-style buffet
with the group of Belgians who were in the hotel.
After further excellent (but expensive Turkish standards for food), we
went to the room before we went went back to the roof because
Mustafa would come with his wife and one of his sons.
He was punctual, but only came up, so unfortunately we were not
raised from our comfy bed. Without a shower in a coma cases. (That will fix anything
had to deal with a half liter of beer)
Tuesday, July 25
On the surprising time of eight hours on the road we went to Van. Because the
hot water only from seven hours I had gone along but no shower.
After a half hour drive could (should) we have to run about this time
along a lava field. I have not really seen much of it because I was with Dick
talking about our common love of science fiction and fantasy. That
man knows a lot and can get very mention of the most number of titles
known writers such as Jack Vance.
After a short drive we arrived at the waterfall where we Muradiye tea
have been drinking.
Despite that I've been talking with Cora wonderful I found
but the pause is very long.
After departure we went to Van, where we first visited have been
at the university where they have established a breeding program with the Van cats. This
Cats are very special because they all have two different colored eyes
and a white coat. All color combinations of green eyes, blue and yellow
available.
When we had all seen and photographed and also a map (picture)
Saskia had bought before we drove into town from the bird flu chickens
drove in Büyük Asur Hotel check-in. In Van was the first human
Turkey bird flu victim, just one week after we had booked. All
Piet kept there for lunch not to take a chicken pies. It was a
of the tents which we thought we could not pay the bill, there were
toothbrush even on the table after tea. Yet the damage, but L17, 00 (€ 8.50).
Then we walk through the city, the museum was closed, and of course
We have a very small print shop with old equipment "visited".
To top it off, Piet is shaved by a barber.
The mustache and sideburns and trimming nose and ear hair short (the last one with fire)
was all part of the treatment is € 1.50. No wonder that Turkish men
not shave himself, but a barber to do. After all that we got
a cup of tea and offered what I was talking to an older man who
(Of course) had lived in Germany.
A little shopping for lunch the next day and we went back
back to the hotel for a few quiet hours, after all it's warm and
vacation.
Arrived at the hotel we have here a cold beer made on the terrace
Hans and Elke, then we went to the room. When we set off for the
dinner in a bakery with seating arrived we saw that we
wrong route had walked. Yet we found it after a while searching:
Besse restaurant. The food was good, but there was absolutely no atmosphere, perhaps because
virtually empty. To us a pleasant terrace of the hotel has a beer
Taken with a little Dick aanschoof.

From diving in the lake we went to the tomb of Hamlin Hatun Kumbeti gone. This
tomb was built for a deceased young woman from the tribe of
The Black Sheep. Then we went by bus and boat to the island and
We have reviewed extensively the monastery. Unfortunately we
restoration activities are not in, but the outside was very nice with
all biblical stories. After the tour we went swimming in the soda-containing
water of the lake.
Was good and my bikini is doing well, so it is again tested.
After our own packed lunch to have eaten (including the beans in sauce
I knock week) we went to his hotel in Kardelen Tatvan. That was
again fine, actually, almost all hotels. Although the room had no
air conditioning, but a good mosquito, so it could just be window at night remain open.
After checking in we went up two vans for a walk around the
crater lake of Mount Nemrut Dagi (not famous). The walk was for me
what concerns against the buses were not right so we need some extra
run. Under the crater lake were some hot water pools and a campground where we
have drunk tea, we dawdle a bit, and be real tea hats. Afterwards
We walk a bit back to the starting location of the bus. Along the way we
against a small tube (the picture seems a lot) and two tortoises.
After returning to the hotel we went to buy fruit and cola and we
then be moved into the only decent restaurant at the long table
the rest of the group. The food came with obstacles but was otherwise well.
Then take a shower and a drink with a little sitting in bed.
Thursday, July 27
For a change, once time road for five hours was the wake-up call and
six hours we were really gone. Although Piet had slept very little, the
of us actually do this every day early. Now it was very hot because it would
be somewhere between 45 and 50 degrees.
We were with a stop for tea and a visit to the tomb of Zeynel
Bey Türbesi quickly near the Tigris. We went over there to
cave dwellings and ruins of Hasankeyf visit. We arrived around half past eleven
and we started the tour of the site.
Because it was hotter
we first started, we had to climb down but had. It is all very
very impressive, especially when you know that people still have until 1963
lived. They had to get out of there because the Government wanted to do excavation and site
wanted to preserve for future generations. The irony is that now there are plans to
to build a dam which will run throughout the area below.
The view was beautiful but very warm. After a drink we had time to
your own lunch. We have really fun with Cora and Arie done
and sitting on cushions on a platform above the Tigris, the lunch was then
also fish from that river was full of bones, but nevertheless we enjoyed and
certainly not spoil the fun. It was the most expensive lunch so far,
or L14,00 pp. Another bought a necklace for L4,00, and then we went on the road again
to Mardin where we were a very nice hotel. The hotel was Erdoba Konklari and
the majority was in an annex. On the outside it did not matter,
but inside the rooms were fine, with private facilities.
There was a
large shower cubicle containing a sink, toilet and a shower in one corner of the
room. Great, but strange to see. Because (unlike the
receptionist promised us) no beer was we started walking and we arrived at
the restaurant we had chosen to eat. That restaurant was completely
great, we were Jacques and Anje and that was fun.
We have eaten here went with obstacles, until I got a little
when very angry that the courts of Anje and came to me, but that of men
yet there was not when we almost ophadden. Later we heard from other
group members that they also had problems with the "speed" of the food.
For nine hours we were back in the room and we go to sleep virtually identical. Piet
took a mix still in bed, but I had had enough and was so so gone.
Friday, July 28
Woke up without an alarm clock, a free morning so we could enjoy
take it easy. So it was a really lazy morning with breakfast where we had a Dutch
couple met and what we have been chatting like very much.
Then we went to a tea garden where we can enjoy long as we have been
just did not feel anywhere else (we still have some time walking around, but
not mention it).
At noon we left by bus to the safraanklooster. The monastery
still used to teach students the ancient language of Jesus is still taught
and used. Before we went to look at the monastery, we add a few
I drank and earrings, a few special cards and a souvenir
for mum bought.
Then we got a tour of a student with all the Ceylan
translated.
After the tour we did an ice cream before we went to our hotel Grand Güler
in Diyarbakir, where we would stay two nights. The hotel is fine, except
that the boss is a dragon of a guy who also uitblaft Mustafa, even though they
is always very friendly and accommodating. During the briefing we were well
warned of petty crime, a shame this is the first time that there
but be warned, and it will also be true, we will therefore have
sure if we extended the town. We had a bath again, this time without
stop, but we could borrow from Cora. Cora even after we check
the bazaar and we walked a beer made on the roof
Sinan restaurant nearby.
After the beer we take a shower and then enjoy dinner at Cora Selim,
We had a delicious dinner and Cora is fine company. Piet had a special kind
köfte and Cora and I took a lamb dish. This was delicious, the bones were
removed at the table and the meat was mixed with two kinds of rice. We could
almost not at that number. Along with water, soft drinks and dessert were
We lost L 39.00 for three people, so it was quite an attack on our
budget.
Piet and I have a beer together afterwards made on the same terrace as
noon, since we were suddenly without warning L 3.00 pp to pay more
because music Sat Weird people in Diyarbakir, especially since we are an outdoor terrace
sat in a corner (without table and actually tucked away).
Saturday, July 29
Again, no alarm clock put, it's like vacation. After breakfast back to the
room and everything so organized but we are at our leisure to the city and there were
could stay as long as we wanted.
First we look for so-called Sufis a sarcophagus in a park along
the
city wall would stand. Which we found after some searching, we were on the wrong
side of the wall walk and had missed him so. From the color it was in
any case, he was as bright green but you can not have you. The color seemed
a bit like the colors of those horrific images in the museum of
Mamallapuram in South India, but otherwise there was not much. We did
nice run the bazaar and there bought a scarf
2.00 L to the mosque to participate in (and not always having to take the sarong
take).
In the mosque courtyard, Piet photos run and I was a long time with a
Turkish
students to talk about university life in both our countries.
After walking a little further to the bazaar we arrived at a small teahouse
where we have been drinking. While it seemed as if I was the woman should not
are, the waiter who was bringing the tea looked at me not to (even though it was a young
maybe some guy who was brought up freer). The rest of the men on the terrace
were said to play a game and watched as no surprise, so it will be my
idea have been. I have yet to be sure but my headscarf gained.
Only when we left there was laughter friendly hello, even to me, it remains
weird. Lunch at a local tent and was made from a natural
doner kebab sandwich. Way to the room for a belly I have two blouses
L bought for 10.00, you can almost not even washed.
Of course we went after the rest walk again, this time through the small streets
of the city and the vegetables and herbs bazaar. On the yogurt and cheese bazaar we
also bought a few beers in the room, given the experience of the last
night we did not want to return a bar to look, we finally have a
refrigerator in the room. While walking we came near the luxury hotel is in
a former caravanserai was built and we went in there for a
refreshment. There were already a few people in the group where we are going
down and got into conversation. When I wanted to settle there was a
misunderstanding. I said to want to pay for the four beers that we used
had and promptly came up with four new ones. Which I have just returned.
On the way back to the hotel I was almost robbed, sat at a young snot
my backpack to fumble. Luckily I looked sideways in the mirror of a window
hotel and saw it. A big hit back and he was gone, but a strange
idea that you do not feel and that nobody in a busy shopping street some
to say. Is it criminal to Diyarbakir?, So sad, but fortunately nothing
happened.
Piet ran back there just to let you know that the thief is not
should try again, but
young man flew behind a car away in a narrow street.
In the hotel the tepid bath water, so we have not expanded in location,
but we spent a soepie done in the room. After an hour we are lame
dinner at restaurant Sarmasik Ocakbasi down the street from the hotel. Course
again a nice grilled chicken pies, including a pair of lamb chops and
lentil soup. Finally some baklava for dessert. That was the
Across met, but there was no less tasty to. Was quite funny
all of the table very soon, cleans up, the water bottle was even
yet to falter when the waiter snatched it from the table.
Back to the hotel where we first have been collected, it was a piece
Yusufeli as expensive but much better cared for. Nice clean and neat
coated for € 15.00 per 10 pieces.
When Piet wanted to open up a can of beer appeared to be frozen and flew
all pressure from the can. Fortunately there are only fit two of the three points in the
freezer, so we had something to drink.
Sunday, July 30
At seven o'clock we left to us by ferry to the right side of the
Tigris had to sail. With only a photo stop of ten minutes we arrived at the
ferry. This turned out to be full so there left earlier. It seemed that
two hours we would have to wait for the next sea, then we will be happy then
be the first. On the tea terrace that we invented Karin between time
a boat or a trip on the river could make, we had nothing here yet
else to do. Meanwhile Karin was negotiating with the owner of
a dilapidated boat came a dolmus thirty-six where people came out. You would
say it does not fit, but we saw it happening. Later it appeared that a
reception was for the couple that the ferry would arrive. As she
waiting on the boat and when the couple moved there from start
to dance. Very nice to see it all.
Piet and I went with six companions on the first boat for our trip
on the River. That was not easy in the beginning, the captain had the greatest difficulty
the engine to get them going and at first we were in circles
the sail, while he was the engine to swing.
When we finally
run we saw the ferry coming back again and we had to go back to the
side. Unfortunately for the second part of the group went to them so the boat ride
nothing, but it meant that we did not need the full two hours to wait.
At ten o'clock we went into, and the trip lasted little more than a
Fifteen minutes.
Euphrates route to our hotel, we just stopped at a supermarket to
(Of course) and so some cookies to take. I bought also a major
melon, because it looked really yummy.
Arriving at our hotel we were first on the terrace but once a cold beer,
still together at lunch and a cup of tea. The bill was a bit annoying,
because he charged for tea 2.50 L, which we obviously did not.
Fortunately he soon woke up and got the price down to 0.50 L, a lot better.
The simple yet full room and slept as good tea. Then
We shared the melon with the group, he was indeed very tasty.
Because everyone was reading, I also added some letters on the site of today
Nemrut Dagi read.
For five hours we took two buses to the start of the short walk to
the top. It is a beautiful site indeed broken, but dramatic images
and is divided into an east and west. On the west side we have yet
dozens of other tourists waiting for the sunset which is not spectacular,
but quite beautiful.
Once down, we bought two heads as souvenirs, but I was with all
much effort from ten percent. Then we drank in a restaurant rather too
long tea before we went down to the vans.
Back at the hotel there was a long table on the terrace, but they had
just not beer. Later they turn lukewarm cans, so it was
all not quite friendly, especially when they have done before people
had eaten the light took off. The food was nice, but came as with
rotgang by a so relaxing it was not all.
The room has a nightcap Piet done and I only go for sleep.
Monday, July 31
Today we head to Sanli Urfa to serve the cave of Abraham and the ponds
holy fish to see. For eight hours we left to go have a look at
take the Ataturk dam. A large project and therefore very impressive, but according
us is that of Aswan is a lot bigger. Then we went a little further
tea drinking where Karen went about the next day. Also on
ballooning in Cappadocia, who apparently had a short version for € 150.00 pp.
It was not long before we decided to do it, then, we have it
has often talked about, including the Netherlands, and this is surely a very special place.
We would take the Internet or plunder.
After tea and all information we took a way a toilet stop on the way to
Hotel Quran. A reasonable hotel with a bath and air conditioning again, all is not
wrong. That air was needed, it was the hottest city we would visit.
Just eat a doner kebab (a favorite lunch seems to be) after
storing the stuff in the room. At half past two we left the bus to
the center. Our hotel is three kilometers or more so to do, but if the bus
but why should we drive to walk.
We went first with the group to the cave of Abraham where the head scarf
in a way that had no more to see her. The ladies
had a short-sleeved overcoat, even here, who was posted.
The inside was quite impressive, not because it was so beautifully decorated and was
but because there are a number of very ordinary people in prayer. I also have pictures can
network. When we went out I saw an elderly woman with a beautiful tattooed
by which I could make a picture. After visiting with the apparently
men's side, nothing showed up as an empty cave without people we went to the
ponds with sacred fish and the wonderful bazaar where we have run the
group.
After a bottle of soda water in the caravanserai in the middle of the bazaar, we
travel together and run on another terrace first sit down to watch
whatever else we were going to do. We searched the restaurant for that evening and
took just a soda. It looks like there are no alcohol
obtain, but we save (I think) too.
After the break but as we look to the restaurant. That was hard
not easy, there was even a son of the tailor to come to us the way
point, he even brought us to it. It was a fantastic restaurant,
seemed an old mansion with a courtyard around which all rooms were around
where you could eat a few people apart. We had a room to ourselves
and were there on cushions on the floor and equipped with air conditioning enjoy a delicious
the food and each others company. When we asked for soda water, lemon We even got
plain soda water with fresh squeezed lime juice. The food was fine, the company
and even when there were a couple of band entered the courtyard was
celebration complete.
After dinner we had a shot of the couple and the invitation to
to come in and cut off at our leisure, we walked back to the hotel.
At the liquor store across the street we have a beer and then went was the day
again.
Tuesday, August 1
In the morning, but no alarm and put on our first gemakkie eaten. Although the
hotel was nice, breakfast was very inadequate. Then we in the city
to run again to make a cup of tea in the bazaar and in the park around the
sacred ponds with fish. We did some walking around and quite
photos of people made, it was all very friendly and nice.
On the way back to our hotel we have a (extended) board doner kebab eaten
with salad and bread.
At half past two we left Harran to visit the quarries. This
mined from the inside, that had everything to do with the tremendous heat that it
In the summer season. So it was a pit and covered in some places seemed
it is a cathedral, so high was cut down and there were some tall pillars.
Harran The village itself is very special, there are more beehive houses like those in
the time of Abraham were built and occupied. The village also has ruins of a
university and a castle. The ruins of the castle we headed by
visited with a guide, those of the university and its mosque were still
further excavated and were not to visit. The guide led us further still
through the village and a museum that was the old house of his grandfather. The
house was pretty big and when I asked him what the function of his grandfather
he said the sheik was a kind of region which is equal to the size stated.
When Piet and I just wanted to go walk through the village did what he
fuss about and just when I started to be tough because I do not be told
I need to do in and grabbed Ceylan was appeased. Later we heard from Cora
Saskia and that they had had problems with it. Really a pity, what
seemed a nice guy (he also did not add much to the tour
value, but allow it). Walking around the village we saw how the people
currently live no longer in beehive houses, but also very simple.
Because it often was so hot there were a large number of family beds where roofs
family summertime lay asleep.
While walking around like there were many
children. At last they were annoying, but made a few angry looks
sure that that was over quickly.
We enjoyed dinner at the home of the parents of the guide, that was good and best
nice.
Back at the hotel was almost the whole group to the liquor store for some beer that sat
there at a good spot and then had his bottles and refrigerators with cold
cans are. We have beer sitting on the chairs in the room drunk.
It went so well that even a glance was Piet bijhalen.
Wednesday, August 2
We waited a very long day, we are probably twelve hours on the road and
Starting at six hours with the ride. Apart from the stops, I slept a lot (which
Finally you otherwise after a short night and a long ride).
At noon, we made a long pause, that was good for us and for
Mustafa necessary, twelve hours driving without a proper break is not good for
, concentration and ultimately not for us.
As the trip went so well in the afternoon we had an opportunity
Derinkuyn the underground city to visit. During wartime living
10,000 people since last two years underground. Impressive, but I should not
think.
En route to our next destination, we were already in the valley of Cappadocia.
When we wanted to stop by for a look that was very nice could not because
it was too dangerous. Moments later it was, but the view was less beautiful.
Monique and Pim started to decline, and when Piet saw that he walked with them back
the previous spot. This was a rebuke to those three or Karin to stand because a
some people had to wait. Apparently that Pim shot in the wrong
throat as he said is true that we sometimes had to wait because
Karen wanted to smoke two cigarettes a stop.
Upon arrival at our hotel in Goreme Ciner we got information about the flight and
we were like € 300.00 handling system.
We have excellent dinner at night together Sedef restaurant, Göreme is a nice
sufficient village with nice restaurants. After dinner we went through the village
and we walked with Karen and Ceylan has made one last drink at the
swimming pool. To bed, tomorrow the alarm goes off at 04.30 hours,
we go sailing in a balloon: whoopee!!
Thursday, August 3
Ballooning over Cappadocia. To 05.15 hours we were picked up by a van and
the field of balloons placed (across the road from us
hotel).
We were given drinks and biscuits and cakes as a light breakfast while
teams to preparing the balloons were. We were ten people in
a small basket and, nine of the group and a guy from New York.
The canal was awesome, I have no other words, the pictures indicate
it out.
A few people have begun to include especially any whining about the heat of
The torch arrived, but once you did well if you always want to be front and
if the balloon goes first. I stood in the middle of the basket and had it hot
if the flame entered into again, but what course you're whining if you can
(Pay).
At the end of the canal put our Belgian pilot balloon neatly at the
trailer and we got our first flight to celebrate a glass of champagne
and a certificate.
We also bought a picture of ourselves in the balloon, which was quite nice and
cost
but L 5.00.
After returning we could have nice breakfast at the hotel and I laid a
complaint about an ongoing toiletbak. When I got the assurance that
looked to be well stocked we went by bus to the open air museum.
We have walked together nice and a lot of things. It was quite busy
with many groups and (some) very annoying guides who felt we had only
waiting as singletons.
After visiting the museum of more than two hours, we drank tea and relaxed
also had dinner at one of the many restaurants. Then I discovered
I get very hot and had preferred to go to the room was going to take some
rest and the worst heat pass up.
Tried to give the toilet continues to run even by someone
had been in another room and we got nominated. This was two
with a double bed instead, but this heat is not
bad. Nice one hour sleep and something to drink.
Then back along the valley, this time just to walk in front of the hotel
could you be so a lot of nice "buildings" are seen. Probably because we almost back
spent two hours before we returned to our hotel. It's really
wonderful, a great fairytale.
Back at the Hotel Pierre was a little down and I write on the terrace
while enjoying one (or two) cold beer. When I came back was Piet shower
and then it went wrong. He was sick and saw a bit of very pale. He is
therefore not been along for the farewell dinner with the group. There, we
Mustafa brought by bus, what a luxury. He also ate them, together with Karin
Ceylan was sick before eating went back to the hotel.
I have a wonderful meal and with Cora, Elly and a bottle of decent Arie
sucked dry white wine (is not that much trouble with four people). I have
nice chatting with Cora, we are each other. Karin and Mustafa were
there too thanks and got their envelope. Very cozy, good food and fun.
Too bad Piet was not there.
In the hotel I recently looked at Piet, who was still in the same state. Still
Ever done with a nightcap Iene, Cora and Saskia with a beer and go to bed.
Piet was still not feeling well and has one hour to a discussion about the data and we
again fell asleep. For five hours it was still not restored, but
After a drink, he fell again into sleep.
Friday, August 4
We were awake for eight hours and when Piet was a little restored, at least
enough to what to eat melon at breakfast. We have not gone to the village,
I just did some shopping at the vegetable farmer just before the village.
Quiet until we did a quarter to twelve o'clock left for our last
bus trip to Ankara.
Along the way we stop at a restored caravanserai and
a large salt lake which was Ceylan's envelope.
After the usual stop at a petrol station we arrived at half past seven the city,
Mustafa but not before a stop just before the city was in an emergency and
surprised us all with a glass of wine in order to celebrate his retirement.
We arrived a little later in the same hotel at the beginning of the journey we
again had a great room.
Although Piet was not fit, we still walked to the Citadel where we
entered into in the restaurant above the city. With a good old-fashioned bottle
wine and just being together. Interestingly, Piet is improved after a
glass of wine (drinking problem?).
When we got after eating the rest of the wine were enjoying came from very
back in action close to an imam, one of the last times we provisionally
would hear again.
Both geploft in bed.
Saturday, August 5
The last day of the holiday. Wonderfully sly and Piet is happy again
all better. After breakfast we continue with the Turkish bazaar walked to
Delight for Mom to buy one last cup of tea to do in a tea garden.
This time in the middle of the bazaar, surrounded by shops with artificial flowers.
Mustafa took us to the airport, of course, after creating the group.
This time with the camera of Piet, he will send him.
Arrived at the airport showed nothing to be with only one
cafeteria where the beer is less than L 14.00 or € 8.00 cost. A beer could
still, that we bought together shared. Ever Iene also has all the loose money
picked up the so pringles Baobab to buy, we therefore
togetherness have eaten.
When the power went the party was complete. It fascinated us all in the beginning
not much, until it appeared that it gives us a significant delayed. Who gave
sure we Munich-airport had to run again as an idiot and the aircraft
just could extract. It also meant that our luggage was not there and we're back
packed light could go home. Fortunately we know the procedure and we had everything
us and we did not worry. Certainly not when we heard that the luggage
Munich was again found, which did so well back home.
That was Eastern turkey, who knows where we hang out again next year.
